Publication Ethics


The ethical policy of MDJ is based on the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines and complies with the MDJ Editorial Board codes of conduct. Readers, authors, reviewers, and editors should follow these ethical policies once working with MDJ. In addition, the ethical policy of MDJ is liable to determine which of the typical research papers or articles submitted to the journal should be published in the concerned issue. Bioethics For Medical Researches

   1.Human Subjects

Any work involving human subjects must be carried out in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki. Authors in their manuscripts must provide a statement that informed consent was obtained from all human research participants for experimentation. The privacy rights of human participants must always be protected. Ethical approval must be obtained before conducting the research for all studies. Authors must be able to provide the journal editorial office with further information upon request.


   2.Animal Studies

All animal studies are recommended to follow ARRIVE reporting guidelines (PLoS Bio 8(6), e1000412,2010) for the design, analysis, and reporting of scientific research, and authors should clearly explain such guidance has been followed in their submitted manuscripts. Sex and other characteristics of animals that may influence results must be described. Furthermore, we recommend the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals (2020), which provide guidance on veterinary best practices for the anesthesia and euthanasia of animals.


General Duties and Responsibilities of the Publisher

     MDJ is committing to ensure that editorial decisions on manuscript submissions are final.

     MDJ is promising to ensure that the decision on manuscript submissions is only made based on                   professional judgment and will not be affected by any commercial interests.

     MDJ is committing to maintaining the integrity of academic and research records.

     MDJ monitors the ethics of the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, Editorial Board Members, Reviewers,        Authors, and Readers.

     MDJ is always checking the plagiarism and fraudulent data issues involved in the submitted                           manuscript.

     MDJ is always willing to publish corrections, clarifications, and retractions involving its publications as         and when needed.


General Duties and Responsibilities of Editors

  1.  The Editors of the journal should have the full authority to reject/accept a manuscript.
  2. The Editors of the journal should maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts under review or until they are published.
  3. The Editor-in-Chief should decide on submitted manuscripts, whether published or not, with other editors and reviewers.
  4. The editor will evaluate submitted papers based on the paper’s importance, originality, and clarity, the study’s validity, and its relevance to the journal's scope without regard to the author’s race, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, citizenship, political philosophy, religious belief or institutional affiliation.
  5. The Editors of the journal should preserve the anonymity of reviewers.
  6. The Editors of the journal should disclose and try to avoid any conflict of interest.
  7.  The Editors of the journal should maintain academic integrity and strive to meet the needs of readers and authors.
  8. The journal editors should be willing to investigate plagiarism and fraudulent data issues and be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when needed.
  9. The Editors of the journal should limit themselves only to the intellectual content.
  10. The journal editors must not disclose any information about submitted manuscripts to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher as appropriate.
  11. Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted paper will not be used by the editor or the editorial board members for their own research purposes without the author's explicit written consent.


General Duties and Responsibilities of Reviewers

  1. The Reviewers of the journal should assist the Editors in deciding to publish the submitted manuscripts.
  2. The Reviewers should maintain the confidentiality of the manuscripts, that they are invited to review.
  3. The Reviewers should provide comments in time that will help editors to make a decision on whether the submitted manuscript is to be published or not.
  4. The Reviewers are bound to treat the manuscript received for peer reviewing as confidential and must not use the information obtained through peer review for personal advantage. 
  5. The Reviewers' comments against each invited manuscript should be technical, professional, and objective.
  6. The Reviewers should not review the manuscripts in which they have found conflicts of interest with any authors, companies, or institutions.
  7. The Reviewers should disclose and try to avoid any conflict of interest.


General Duties and Responsibilities of Authors

  1. Submit only entirely original works, and appropriately cite or quote the work and/or words of others. Publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work should also be cited.
  2. Manuscripts must be submitted only in English and should be written according to sound grammar and proper terminology.
  3. Manuscripts must be submitted to understand that they have not been published elsewhere and are not currently under consideration by another journal published by or any other publisher.
  4. The corresponding author ensures that all contributing co-authors and no uninvolved persons are included in the author list and is responsible for ensuring that all the other coauthors have approved the manuscript article's publication.
  5. The author's responsibility is to ensure that the manuscripts emanating from a particular institution are submitted with the approval of the necessary institution.
  6. It is a condition for submitting a manuscript that the authors permit editing of the paper for readability.
  7. Authors are requested to identify who provided financial support for the conduct of research and/or preparation of the manuscript and briefly describe the role of the founder/ sponsor in any part of the work.
  8. All authors should include a statement disclosing any financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that may be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript.
  9. All authors agreed to allow the corresponding author to correspond with the editorial office to review the edited manuscript and proof.
  10. All authors must know that the submitted manuscripts under review or published with MDJ are subject to screening using Plagiarism Prevention Software. Plagiarism is a serious violation of publication ethics.
  11. All authors must ensure that all authors have read the submission final checklist before being submitted to the MDJ .
  12. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
  13. By submitting a manuscript, the author(s) retain the rights to the published material. In case of publication, they permit the use of their work under a [CC BY-NC license]  which allows others to copy, distribute, and transmit the work as well as to adapt the work and make commercial use of it.
  14. In the case of an authorship dispute during peer review or after acceptance and publication, the Journal will not be in a position to investigate or adjudicate. Authors will be asked to resolve the dispute themselves. If they are unable, the Journal reserves the right to withdraw a manuscript from the editorial process or in the case of a published paper raise the issue with the authors’ institution(s) and abide by its guidelines.
  15. We reserve the right to reject a paper even after it has been accepted if it becomes apparent that there are serious problems with its scientific content or our publishing policies have been violated.
  16. Articles that include errors that are duplicates of or very similar to other published article(s), or are determined to violate the journals’ publishing ethics guidelines in the view of the editors, may be withdrawn.
  17. For studies involving humans, informed consent should be obtained from all research participants for experimentation.
  18. Ethical approval must be obtained before conducting the research for all studies involving humans and animals. All experiments must be performed in accordance with relevant institutional and national guidelines and regulations.
  19. All authors must ensure read the submission final checklist before being submitted to Mustansiriya Dental Journal (MDJ).


Principles of Transparency

  • Peer review process: Mdj is a semiannual publication that focuses on Dental sciences. It undergoes a double-blind peer review process and is available in both electronic and print formats. The journal's website:, provides a clear description of this process, as well as any policies related to peer review procedures.




  • Author fees / Access: rewrite: The magazine is completely open, meaning all articles and access to the magazine's contents are free. In addition, the authors should pay ID 50,000, free of charge for joint research with publishers from outside Iraq, and free for publishers from outside Iraq.


  • Identification of and dealing with allegations of research misconduct: Editor-in-Chief takes reasonable steps to identify and prevent the publication of papers where research misconduct has occurred, including plagiarism, citation manipulation, and data falsification/fabrication, among others.



  • Name of journal: The Journal name of Mustansiriya Dental Journal (MDJ) is unique and no one is easily confused with other journals.


  • Conflicts of Interests (Authors): Authors are asked whether impending conflicts do or do not exist while submitting their articles to MDJ through the Conflict of Interest disclosure form.


  • Conflict of Interests (Editors and Reviewers): Editors and reviewers associated with Mustansiriya Dental Journal are required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest that might affect their impartiality or objectivity in the review and editorial process. This includes but is not limited to financial interests, personal relationships, academic collaborations, or institutional affiliations that could influence their judgment. In case of any such conflicts, editors, and reviewers are expected to recuse themselves from handling submissions or reviewing articles where their impartiality might be compromised. Transparency and adherence to ethical standards are vital to maintaining the integrity and fairness of our editorial and review processes.




Handling Cases of Misconduct

Once the journal confirms a violation of the publication ethics, MDJ addresses ethical concerns diligently, following an issue-specific standard practice as summarized below.


  • The first action of the section's editor is to inform the Editor and the Editorial Office by supplying copies of the relevant material and a draft letter to the corresponding author asking for an explanation in a nonjudgmental manner.
  • If the corresponding author's explanations are unacceptable, and it seems that serious unethical conduct has occurred, the matter is referred to the Editorial board via the Editorial Office. After deliberation, the editorial board will decide whether the case is sufficiently serious to warrant a ban on future submissions.
  • If the infraction is less severe, the Editor, upon the advice of the Publication Committee, sends the author a letter of disapproval and reminds the author about MDJ publication and ethical policies; if the manuscript has been published, the Editor may request the author to publish an apology in the journal to correct the record.
  • A notification will be sent to the corresponding author. Any work by the author responsible for the violation or any work these persons co-authored under review by the MDJ journal will be rejected immediately.
  • The authors are prohibited from serving on the MDJ editorial board and serving as a reviewer for the MDJ Journal. However, MDJ reserves the right to take more action.
  • In extreme cases, notifications will be sent to the authors' affiliations, and the authors are prohibited from submitting their work to MDJ for 5 years.
  • In serious fraud cases that result in the retraction of the article, a retraction notice will be published in the journal and linked to the article in the online version. The online version will also be marked “retracted” with the retraction date.


Violation of Publication Ethics

  • Plagiarism: Plagiarism intentionally uses someone else’s ideas or other original material as if they are one's own. Copying even one sentence from someone else’s manuscript, or even one of your own that has previously been published, without proper citation, is considered by MDJ Journals as plagiarism. All manuscripts under review or published with MDJ are subject to screening using plagiarism-prevention software. Thus, plagiarism is a serious violation of publication ethics. The development of CrossCheck is a service that helps editors to verify the originality of papers. CrossCheck is powered by Turnitin software, known in the academic community as a provider of Turnitin. For a searchable list of all journals in the CrossCheck database.
  • Data Fabrication and Falsification: Data fabrication and falsification mean the researcher did not carry out the study but made up data or results and recorded or reported the fabricated information. Data falsification means the researcher did the experiment but manipulated, changed, or omitted data or results from the research findings.
  • Simultaneous Submission: Simultaneous submission occurs when a manuscript (or substantial sections from a manuscript) is submitted to a journal when it is already under consideration by another journal.
  • Duplicate Publication: Duplicate publication occurs when two or more papers, without full cross-referencing, share essentially the same hypotheses, data, discussion points, and conclusions.
  • Redundant Publications: Redundant publications involve the inappropriate division of study outcomes into several articles, most often consequent to the desire to plump academic vitae.
  • Improper Author Contribution or Attribution: All listed authors must have made a significant scientific contribution to the research in the manuscript and approved all its claims. Don’t forget to list everyone who made a significant scientific contribution, including students and laboratory technicians.
  • Citation Manipulation: Citation Manipulation includes excessive citations in the submitted manuscript that do not contribute to the scholarly content of the article and have been included solely to increase citations to a given author’s work or articles published in a particular journal. This leads to misrepresenting the importance of the specific work and journal in which it appears and is thus a form of scientific misconduct.
  • Sanctions: If there are documented violations of any of the above mentioned policies in any journal, regardless of whether or not the violations occurred in a journal, the following sanctions will be applied: (i) Immediate rejection of the infringing manuscript, (ii)Immediate rejection of every other manuscript submitted to any journal published by any of the authors of the infringing manuscript, (iii) Prohibition will be imposed for a minimum of 36 months against all of the authors for any new submissions to any journal, either individually or in combination with other authors of the infringing manuscript, and (iv) Prohibition against all of the authors from serving on the Editorial Board of any journal.


Appeals and Complaints

  1. Policy and Process

This procedure pertains to appeals concerning editorial decisions, grievances regarding process failures, such as significant delays in paper handling, and complaints about publication ethics. Initially, the Editor-in-Chief(s) of the relevant journal or the editor responsible for managing the paper should handle the complaint. If they are the subject of the complaint, please contact the in-house publishing representative. (Refer to the contacts page on the journal homepage.   1. Complaint about scientific content (e.g., an appeal against rejection)

The Editor-in-Chief or the Handling Editor carefully evaluates the authors' assertions and the feedback from reviewers to determine:

  1. Whether the rejection decision remains valid.
  2. Whether an additional unbiased viewpoint is necessary.
  3. If the appeal merits consideration.

The individual who filed the complaint is notified of the decision, along with an explanation if deemed necessary. Rulings on appeals are conclusive, and priority is given to new submissions over appeals.


  1. Complaint about processes (e.g., time taken to review)

The Editor-in-Chief, along with the Handling Editor (as needed) and/or the in-house contact (as necessary), will conduct an investigation into the issue. The individual who filed the complaint will receive relevant feedback. This feedback is shared with the relevant stakeholders to enhance processes and protocols.


  1. Complaint about publication ethics (e.g., researcher's author's, or reviewer's conduct)

The Editor-in-Chief or Handling Editor adheres to the guidelines set forth by the Committee on Publication Ethics. They have the option to seek guidance from the publisher's in-house contact for complex cases. After evaluating the situation, the Editor-in-Chief or Handling Editor determines a course of action and offers feedback to the individual raising the concern. Should the complainant still express dissatisfaction with the handling of their complaint, they have the opportunity to submit the matter to the Committee on Publication Ethics.
